The pupils visited the site’s heritage centre where they learnt about the history of the railway and former colliery, before having a look at the railway’s collection of rolling stock in the stock shed. They were then able to see the railway’s working diesel locomotive no. 10222 and wooden brake van first hand at the centre’s station platform. The railway would like to thank the school for visiting and Chairman of Llanelli Rural Council John Evans for also lending his support to the event.

Ysgol Pum Heol teacher Dewi Owen said ‘Today was a great opportunity for the children of Ysgol Pum Heol to experience history. The oldest public Railway in Britain. An occasion that the children will carry with them always’.

The Llanelli & Mynydd Mawr Railway have been working closely with Ysgol Pum Heol in recent months, with the pupils having previously carried out some work projects on the charity’s steam locomotive Avonside 0-4-0 Saddle Tank no. 1498 named ‘Desmond’. The school have been enthusiastic supporters of the restoration of the steam locomotive, with the school recognising the historical and educational value of a restoration being completed. The locomotive is currently located in Llangollen, north Wales awaiting a restoration grant and the LMMR are hoping to be successful in bringing the loco to south Wales in time for their Christmas 2018 events.
