The CabSim Project: Taking Railway Enthusiasm to the next level!

The CabSim Project aims to convert upcycled train cabs into accessible, interactive train simulators — designed to be inclusive for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility.
Beyond accessibility, CabSim also serves as a safe and welcoming environment for people with autism, allowing them to engage socially or enjoy immersive solo driving therapy in a calm and supportive setting.
This simulator offers users the unique chance to operate a highly authentic “Plastic Pig” driving position, faithfully recreating the original Class 442 cab’s controls, sounds, and atmosphere for a truly immersive experience.
About the Class 442 Wessex Electric
Introduced in 1988, the British Rail Class 442 Wessex Electric units were designed to serve the Southern Region’s main lines, especially the South Western Main Line running between London Waterloo and coastal destinations such as Portsmouth and Weymouth. These trains were constructed at Derby Litchard Lane, creatively combining refurbished Mark 3 coaches with traction equipment salvaged from older 1950s-era Class 432 “4-REP” units. This blend gave rise to the distinctive “Wessex Electric” trains.

Train Simulators for Everyone
CabSim is also built for train enthusiasts eager to experience authentic driving routines and routes. Using Dovetail Games’ Train Sim World software fully integrated within the cab, TC Controllers engineered a sophisticated interface that links the original mechanical controls to digital commands, bringing the best of both worlds together.
At CabSim, we’re here to play, explore, and celebrate the joy of train driving — all within an accessible and caring community.
Saving the Cab
The cab was carefully rescued by The Cab Yard/LMMR in May 2020, thanks to the generous assistance of Raxstar Recycling and Arlington Fleet Services at Eastleigh Works. Removing the cab was a challenging process involving mechanical braking equipment, with several attempts on other units before successfully extracting the cab from 442405. After being stored for four years, it was selected as the test bed for the innovative CabSim project.
Using the simulator
The simulator is now available to hire by the hour in 2025. Available dates are available to view at https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/llanellirailway
The simulator will be operational at the LMMR throughout 2026. It was showcased at The Greatest Gathering at Litchurch Lane, Derby on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd August 2025.
