The Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr Railway has been awarded £40,000 (forty thousand pounds) from the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund and £20,000 (twenty thousand pounds) from the Carmarthenshire County Council Targeted Finance fund to create a Community Hub at Cynheidre including cafe facilities.

This has incorporated the body shell of a single car ‘SuperSprinter’ unit (kindly donated by Transport for Wales and supported by Chrysalis Rail), giving it a unique railway feel. The much needed provision of a mains electricity supply for the site also forms part of this project and this was installed during September 2024.
 

The Carmarthenshire County Council Targeted Finance Fund grant has further supported the provision of electricity to the site and the development of a cafe for visitors and the local community whilst also facilitating the creation of two job opportunities at the railway. The Coalfields Regeration Trust have kindly awarded us £7,000 towards the cost of staff wages for 2025-2026 through their community award.

The new facility was formally opened to the public by Cllr. Alex Evans on Saturday 19th April 2025.

The cafe will plug the gap in catering facilities along the National Cycle Network Route 47 between Tumble and Horeb and will be easily accessible to cyclists, walkers and joggers using the route, as well as road users using the busy B4309 linking Llanelli and Carmarthen.
